il governo israeliano ha rinunciato a fare evacuare la piu' grande tra le colonie illegali in cisgiordania, informando la corte suprema che gli abitanti di migron potranno restare sul luogo fino a che una nuova colonia (ancora su suolo palestinese, dunque illegale) verra' costruita per accoglierli; nessuna data e' comunque ancora fissata per l'eventuale "trasloco". i coloni avevano piu' volte minacciato una risposta violenta nel caso fossero stati costretti ad andarsene.
questa mattina intanto, e' stato pubblicato da "haaretz" il risultato di un rapporto della polizia israeliana dove si evince che i casi di violenza e aggressione commessi dai coloni verso i palestinesi e' aumentato a livello esponenziale: gia' 429 "incidenti" nei primi sei mesi del 2008, contro i 551 di tutto l'anno 2007.Pubblicato da arpia | Commenti (7)

"truthdig" has an interesting piece on georgia war: it smells theory of complot, but it's interesting nevertheless for its accuracy.
randy scheunemann, for four years a paid lobbyist for the georgian government who ended his official lobbying connection only in march, months after he became republican presidential candidate john mccain’s senior foreign policy adviser. previously, scheunemann was best known as one of the neoconservatives who engineered the war in iraq when he was a director of the project for a new american century.
it is inconceivable that georgian president saakashvili would have triggered a dangerous escalation in the region of south ossetia without some assurance from influential americans he trusted, like scheunemann, that the US would have his back.
"mccain gets to look tough with a new cold war to fight while democratic presidential candidate barack obama, scrambling to make sense of a more measured foreign policy posture, will seem weak in comparison. meanwhile, the dire consequences of the bush legacy that mccain has inherited, from the disaster of iraq to the economic meltdown, conveniently will be ignored".

the collapse of the georgian offensive represents not only a disaster for that country and its US-backed leaders, but another blow to the myth of israel's military prestige and prowess. since 2000, israel has sold hundreds of millions of dollars in arms and combat training to georgia. weapons included guns, ammunition, shells, tactical missile systems, antiaircraft systems, automatic turrets for armored vehicles, electronic equipment and remotely piloted aircraft. these sales were authorized by the israeli defense ministry.
top israeli officials would sometimes personally supervise the training of georgian forces which included house-to-house fighting. the training was carried out through several "private" companies with close links to the israeli military.
the key liaison was reserve brigadier general gal hirsch who commanded israeli forces on the border with lebanon during the july 2006 war. he resigned from the army after the winograd commission severely criticized israel's conduct of its war against lebanon and an internal israeli army investigation blamed hirsch for the seizure of two soldiers by hezbollah.
